white Light, Made Permanent
White is the colour of light itself. In natural stone it brings brightness, openness and calm, a pure foundation that lets texture and craftsmanship take centre stage.
The Design Palette’s white natural stone mosaics bring together the great white marbles of Italy and Greece: Carrara, Calacatta and Thassos. Carrara offers soft white with fine grey veining, Calacatta brings bright white moved by bold gold and violet, and Thassos is among the purest whites in natural stone.
Translated into architectural formats, from herringbone, arch, penny round and 25mm and 48mm hexagon to Scarpa and outline hexagon designs, our white mosaics bring light and refinement to kitchen splashbacks, bathroom walls and floors, vanities and wet areas. Based in Sydney and supplying projects across Australia, we work with architects, interior designers, builders and homeowners creating bright, timeless interiors.

COLOUR // WHITE
ORIGIN + History
White is one of the oldest colour words in English. It comes from Old English hwit, meaning bright, radiant and clear, and traces back to an ancient root meaning “to shine”. So white was first understood not as an absence of colour, but as light, the quality of something luminous.
That original meaning suits white marble perfectly. Its crystalline structure catches and reflects light, which is why white stone has been prized for temples, sculpture and architecture for thousands of years.

The Stones of white
Carrara. Quarried in the Apuan Alps of Tuscany since Roman times, Carrara is the most celebrated white marble in the world, the stone Michelangelo chose for his David.
Calacatta. From more limited deposits higher in the same mountains, Calacatta is a rarer white marble, distinguished by bold veins of gold, grey or violet.
Thassos. Quarried on the Greek island of Thassos in the northern Aegean since the seventh century BC, Thassos marble is known for its exceptionally pure white. Its seaside quarries shipped marble across the Mediterranean for more than 1,200 years, including to Rome.
At The Design Palette, we see white as light made permanent. These natural stones remain beautiful for decades, gaining character over time rather than wearing out. In a design culture of constant replacement, that endurance is its own form of sustainability.
