The Design Palette’s black natural stone mosaics are led by Nero Marquina, the celebrated black stone of Spain’s Basque Country. Its deep black ground and crisp white veining create a graphic, timeless contrast, especially when paired with the soft white of Carrara marble.

ORIGIN + History
Black has a surprising beginning: it comes from fire. The Old English blæc traces back to a Germanic word meaning “burned”, from an ancient root meaning to burn, gleam and shine. Black was the colour of what fire leaves behind: soot, coal and charcoal.
Stranger still, the same root produced a Middle English word, blake, meaning pale or shining, so for a time it was unclear whether the word meant dark or light. In natural stone, black carries that same duality: deep, light-absorbing stone lit by bright white veins.

The Stones of black
Nero Marquina. Quarried around the town of Markina in the Basque Country of northern Spain, Nero Marquina is a fine-grained black limestone, sold as marble, that takes its colour from naturally occurring bitumen. Its compact black ground and white veining have made it one of Spain’s most internationally recognised stones, alongside Crema Marfil and Rojo Alicante.
Carrara. Paired with Nero Marquina in many of our designs, Carrara’s soft Italian white creates the classic black-and-white contrast that has defined floors and interiors for centuries.
At The Design Palette, we see black as the colour of clarity. These natural stones remain beautiful for decades, gaining character over time rather than wearing out. In a design culture of constant replacement, that endurance is its own form of sustainability.
