The Design Palette’s beige natural stone mosaics bring together the warm neutrals of Italy and Spain: Botticino marble, Crema Marfil and Travertine. Each holds its own character, from soft Italian cream to sunlit Spanish ivory to the open, organic texture of travertine, yet together they share a quiet warmth that grounds a space without overpowering it.
Translated into architectural formats, from arabesque, KitKat and tweed herringbone to fluted, Notre Dame, Scarpa and basketweave, our beige mosaics bring texture and light to kitchen splashbacks, bathroom feature walls, floors and wet areas. ORIGIN + History
Beige began with cloth. The word comes from Old French bege, which as early as the thirteenth century described the natural colour of wool and cotton: raw, unbleached and undyed. It was a regional word, linked especially to Burgundy and Franche-Comté in eastern France.
By the mid-nineteenth century, beige had become the name of a colour. It appeared in French around 1855, the novelist Edmond de Goncourt used it in 1877, and by the late 1800s it had entered English. In natural stone, beige returns to its original meaning: material in its true, unaltered state, its colour formed by the earth rather than applied.

The Stones of Beige
Botticino. Quarried near Brescia in northern Italy, Botticino is a classic Italian marble with a soft cream base and delicate veining, used for more than two thousand years, from Rome’s Vittoriano to the base of the Statue of Liberty.
Crema Marfil. From Monte Coto in Spain’s Alicante province, Crema Marfil is a warm cream limestone formed around forty million years ago from ancient marine sediments.
Travertine. Formed by mineral-rich springs and laid down over thousands of years, travertine carries an open, organic texture, with a lineage that runs from the Colosseum to contemporary architecture.
At The Design Palette, we see beige as the colour of longevity. These natural stones remain beautiful for decades, gaining character over time rather than wearing out. In a design culture of constant replacement, that endurance is its own form of sustainability.
