BOTTICINO
ORIGIN + History
Botticino takes its name from the town near Brescia where it has been quarried for more than two thousand years. The Romans used it in Brescia's Capitoline Temple, and through the medieval and Renaissance periods it shaped some of the city's finest buildings.
Its most famous moment came in Rome. The Vittoriano, the monumental Altar of the Fatherland, was first designed in travertine, but in 1889 the decision was made to build it in Botticino, a stone prized for its compactness and luminous sheen. The same marble crossed the Atlantic for the base of the Statue of Liberty, and in 1904 it lined the vast interiors of Grand Central Terminal in New York.
