Spanish Red, Shaped by Ancient Seas
Quarried in the Alicante province of Spain, Rojo Alicante is one of the most recognised red natural stones in the world. Its rich red ground, broken by irregular white veining, gives each piece a distinct character, so no two tiles are alike. Sold as a marble and geologically a fine-grained limestone, it is dense, durable and well suited to interior walls and feature surfaces.
The Design Palette's Rojo Alicante stone mosaics translate this bold Spanish stone into refined, architectural formats. Arch, herringbone and KitKat designs, along with an arabesque pairing Rojo Alicante with Crema Marfil, bring colour and depth to kitchen splashbacks, bathroom feature walls, powder rooms, bars and hospitality interiors. Based in Sydney and supplying projects across Australia, we work with architects, interior designers, builders and homeowners who want natural stone with presence and a strong point of view.

ROJO ALICANTE
ORIGIN + History
Rojo Alicante began on an ancient seabed. Around forty million years ago, fine sediments, shell fragments and the remains of tiny marine organisms settled layer upon layer and slowly compacted into limestone. Iron oxides gave the stone its deep red colour. Over time, cracks filled with crystalline calcite, forming the white veins that move across its surface.
For decades Rojo Alicante has been one of Spain's most celebrated stones, exported worldwide and prized for decorative architecture from Europe to the Middle East. Today its reserves are increasingly limited, with only a handful of quarries still producing it. That scarcity makes every piece more considered. It shares its homeland with Crema Marfil and Rosado, completing Alicante's palette of cream, blush and deep red.
At The Design Palette, we see Rojo Alicante as a stone for spaces with conviction. It remains beautiful for decades, gaining character over time rather than wearing out. In a design culture of constant replacement, that endurance is its own form of sustainability.
